U.S. VeteranCOLUMBIANA- A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Jude Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Thomas Ziegler celebrating for Samuel B. Magee, 77, of Columbiana, who passed away Monday morning, January 7, at Salem Community Hospital.

Samuel was born on September 15, 1935 in Toledo, a son of Samuel J. and Martha Ann (Byard) Magee.

A 1953 graduate of DeVilbiss High School, Sam attended OSU, Glassboro State College, and in 1986, he received his Bachelors of Humanities degree from Edison State College.

He served his country in the US Army from 1957 to 1963, and was stationed at Fort Knox and Fort Atterbury.

Sam retired from Hubbell Bell of Fogelsville, Pa., as a plant manager. He had also previously worked for Ohio Brass in Mansfield as a plant manager.

He served on the Board of Directors for the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, Pa., and on the building committee for St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kutztown, Pa., and was a past board member of the Ned Smith Center for Fine Arts in Millersville, Pa.

He was an avid nature artist. Sam had art shows in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Ohio. His artwork has been displayed locally as well, most notably at the Butler Institute of American Art, the Pittsburgh Arboretum, and Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park.

He was also active in the Berks County (Pa.) Art Council and was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.

Sam leaves to cherish his precious memory his wife, Rosemary (Bender) Magee; a daughter, Kim (Darrell) Bevelhymer of Lisbon; two sons, Lt. Col. David (Joanne) Magee of Fayetteville, N.C. and John (Susana) Magee of Middleburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Dr. Jessica (Robert) Krueger, Jill (Joshua) Burton, and Brianna and Ashlyn Magee; three great-grandchildren, Kiersten, Bryleigh, and Samuel; a sister, Carol Sue (Jeff) Wagner; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to9:45 am Friday at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana.
