Alvin C. Carroll

February 1, 1920 ~ January 9, 2018 (age 97) 97 Years Old

SALEM – Another member of the greatest generation - Alvin C. Carroll, 97, died Tuesday morning, January 9, 2018 at Blossom Nursing and Rehab Center in Salem, OH.

Alvin was born February 1, 1920, in Leetonia, OH, a son of William D. and Wilda (Gromley) Carroll. He was the grandson of an Irish immigrant and the great grandson of a Pennsylvania blacksmith.  He lived and worked in the area his whole life.  Alvin attended Leetonia schools.  He was drafted into the Army prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, and served during WWII from 1941 to 1945.  Alvin was stationed in France and Germany in chemical mortars, attached to General Patton.

On October 15, 1943 he married Helen Esther Raley of Rogers, who preceded him in death on November 11, 2017.  They celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary in 2017.  Alvin drove a school bus for the Rogers school system in the 1950s.  He was also employed in the coal stripping business, and retired from NRM in Columbiana after many years of employment.  He also lived on farms and tilled the land.  He enjoyed wood working and reading the Farm and Dairy until the loss of his vision.    Alvin liked being outside ‘tinkering,’ walking his dog Mike or sitting under the tree visiting his best friend Ernie Zeitler.  Ernie and Alvin enjoyed going to the County Fair and watching the Harness Races.

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Donna Carroll of Columbiana; his son Timothy (Barb) Carroll of Leetonia; two grandchildren Tamantha Vadino-Jacobs of Leetonia and Alvin P. (Cara) Carroll of Austintown; five great-grandchildren Blaine, Helena, and Miranda Vadino and Sawyer and Juliana Carroll and a brother Ronald Carroll of Canfield.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen, a great-grandson Garrett Vadino, a grandson-in-law, Todd Vadino, and siblings Paul and Jack Carroll and Jean Corkum.
