Alma Orr Ruppel, formerly of Columbiana, died at Salem Community Hospital on May 9, 2011, from complications following a fractured hip. Alma was born in Columbiana, August 28, 1920, one of eight children of Katharina Schuller and Michael Drotleff. She was a retiree of the A and P Tea Company and Franklin Furniture Company. She and her first husband Clifford Orr were among the founding members of The Columbiana Rose Society, and she was well known for growing beautiful roses. She was a former member of The Salem Golf Club, Columbiana American Legion Auxiliary, Columbiana Garden Club, Columbiana Women's Club, Columbiana Fairfield Historical Society, and several area bridge clubs. She was a lifelong member of The Columbiana First United Methodist Church where she was a former choir member. She is survived by two daughters Jan Orr Shaffer of Brecksville, Ohio, and Karen (Philip) Buchmann of Salem, Ohio; two grandchildren, Zachary (Terry) Buchmann of Mukwonago, Wisconsin, and Sarah Beth (Dr. Jeffrey) Corney of Stacy, Minnesota, and three great grandchildren, Liliana Diann Buchmann, and Tristan Jeffrey, and Adelyn Jane Corney. She is also survied by two sisters, Shirley Bowen and Anne Kinnear, both of Fort Myers, Florida. Along with two brothers Fred Drotleff of Fort Myers, Florida and Albert (Mary Lou) Drotleff of Columbiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Diane Elizabeth Orr, her first husband Clifford J. Orr, whom she married July 27, 1940, her second husband William J. Ruppel whom she married August 14, 1981, two brothers, Carl Drotleff and Henry Drotleff and one sister Wilhelmina Bentley. The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Michael Lileas, and to Hospice of the Valley staff for their understanding, compassion, and kindness; and to the staff of Sterling House, Salem: and to the nursing staff on 3 East at Salem Community Hospital for all of their tender loving care. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church Chapel, Columbiana, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Paula Archdeacon officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home, Columbiana. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Alma to Project H.E.L.L.O. c/o Salem Community Hospital, 1995 East State St. Salem, Ohio 44460, the memorial fund of First United Methodist Church Columbiana, 210 South Main, Columbiana, Ohio 44408, or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St, Youngstown 44512.
