Obituary

BOARDMAN – Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima, for Bertha A. (Whan) Richards, 98, formerly of 11150 Woodworth Road in North Lima. She passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, at Beeghly Oaks in Boardman, where she was currently residing. Bertha was born on Feb. 4, 1918, in Youngstown, the daughter of William Homer Whan and Margaret Matilda (Roys) Whan. A graduate of North Lima High School, class of 1936, Bertha, played basketball for NLHS. She was a member of the North Lima Grange and the Mt. Olivet United Church of Christ, where she taught SundaySchool. She enjoyed golfing two days a week until she was in her 80s. She also enjoyed bowling, writing poetry, reading, playing Solitaire, and taking care of her rose garden. She and her husband, Paul enjoyed traveling to Florida, playing cards, hosting both family picnics and the traditional Whan Family Christmas Night. She loved caring for her great-grandson, Drew, whenever she had the chance, teaching him the love of golf! Before her marriage, she worked for the Sheet and Tube Co. in the payroll office. Bertha married her husband, Paul A. Richards on Sept. 21, 1940, and together they shared 69 years of marriage and raised three children. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, LaUna (Lee) and Frank Mrozek of Poland; a son, Gary P. Richards of Warren; daughter-in-law, Susan A. Richards of Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren, Jodi L. (Donald) Conley; Christopher J. Mrozek; and Michelle (Abram) Bissell; four great-grandchildren, Drew and Alex Conley, Ella and Ava Bissell; sister-in-law, Mary Whan; and many nieces and nephews. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul, who passed away April 22, 2010; her son, Dr. Duane B. Richards; her sisters, Katherine Perry and Eleanor Ralston; and her brothers, William and Dr. Glenn A. Whan. Family and friends will be received one hour prior to the service at 11 a.m. at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512. The family has entrusted to the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima, with the arrangements for their loved one.
