Betty Jean
Miller
Nov 12, 1928 — Jul 9, 2014
NORTH LIMA - Betty Jean Miller, 85, of North Lima, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 9 at Hospice House with her family by her side. Betty was born on November 12, 1928 in Dayton, a daughter of Verne and Thelma Hyre. Betty married Charles Raymond Miller on December 17, 1945. Together they raised seven children. They were anticipating celebrating their 68th anniversary when he passed away on November 26, 2013. Betty worked very hard her whole life. As a farmer's wife, she worked along side her husband tending animals, birthing lambs or pigs; and doing any chore that needed done. In the early years they milked several cows by hand; separated and sold the cream; made their own butter; did their own butchering; and smoked their own sausage. Betty wanted her children to be well rounded and kept them busy in the right things. She was a strong advocate for scouting, serving many years as both a Girl Scout Leader and a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts. She encouraged her children to participate in 4-H and supported that involvement. Betty was active for many years when her children were young at Zion Hill Church of the Brethren, in women's groups, and as a youth advisor. For several years, Wednesday evenings would find Betty hosting Girls Club at her home for food, fun, crafts and Christian fellowship. She also wanted to make sure her children grew up with something she did not have - stability. Betty attended 10 different schools by the ninth grade, and did not graduate high school. Her wish was that her children would live in the same house and attend one school all the way through. And all seven did just that. They all graduated, making her wish a reality. Betty was a member of "Families in Touch," a support group for parents with children who struggled with mental illness. Betty worked at the Board of Elections as well. She was well-known for her baking, appearing on the front page of the Rotograve pictorial section of The Vindicator, showcasing her many pies. She was renowned for her pies and cookies. Betty was passionate about gardening; planting multitudes of fruits and vegetables including sweet corn, potatoes, zucchini, strawberries, plums, apples, sour cherries, and apricots. She canned, baked, and froze much of this with the intention of giving it away to her friends and family. Betty's true calling was to give of herself to her friends - whether it be a loaf of zucchini bread or a ride to the doctor. Many friends relied on her for transportation to the store, or a visit, or a meal. She was happiest knowing she had made someone's day easier. She leaves to cherish her precious memory two daughters, Dorothy M. Miller of Youngstown and Karen D. (Robert) Boyce of Frostburg, MD; four sons, Lloyd V.(Pam Garver) Miller of Greenford, Raymond A. (Angie) Miller of North Lima, Russell Miller of Finland, and Steven C. (Sandy) Miller of Hermitage, PA; ten grandchildren, Bill Jones, Sarah Potts, Charles, Tobias, and Kathryn Miller, Kimberly Gierescher, Christopher, Elisabeth, Patrick, and Steven Miller; seven great-grandchildren, Brandon Pyatt, Hayden Wood, Emily Fowler, Elias Miller, Lily Bigley, Jonathan and Nicholas Jones. In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Lucille Blunt and Edna Mae Weller, a brother, Richard Hyre, and a son, William E. Miller. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 26 at 11 a.m. at Zion Hill Church of the Brethren, 14550 New Buffalo Rd., Columbiana, with Pastor Peter Fowler of First Friends Church officiating. A luncheon for family and friends will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Betty's memory to the First Friends Church,1028 Jennings Ave, Salem, OH 44460. The Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima, Ohio has been entrusted with the arrangements. Family and friends are invited to visit www.seederly-mongandbeck.com to sign the guestbook or send private condolences.
