Obituary

On Wednesday, November 18th at approximately 3:55 a.m., Cathleen Ann Wagner, of Columbiana, Ohio, passed away due to complications of the H1N1 virus. Mrs. Wagner had been ill for nearly three weeks, having spent most of that time in intensive care at the Cleveland Clinic. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Salem, Ohio with Pastor Alan Smearsoll and Pastor Bill Wilkins officiating. A brief viewing period will precede the service, and will begin at 10:00 a.m. that morning. Cathleen was born on October 30th, 1954, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was raised in the nearby community of Cheswick. She was the daughter of Janet and the late Raymond L. Calvert. She attended Springdale High School in Springdale, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1972 with high honors. She then went on to study education at Slippery Rock University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in 1976 and eventually going on to receive a Master's in Education from Youngstown State University. A devoted elementary school teacher, Mrs. Wagner spent nearly 30 years teaching at Joshua Dixon Elementary School in Columbiana, Ohio. Most recently, Mrs. Wagner taught Kindergarten, but before that she had taught the first and third grades. Mrs. Wagner was the recipient of many accolades recognizing her outstanding achievements as an educator. In 1991, she was awarded the Myrtle Miller - Marijane Werner Award for Exemplary Mathematics Teaching by the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics. One year later, she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching for the State of Ohio, earning an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where she met and had dinner with several elected officials and state dignitaries, including then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Wagner was deeply honored to receive these awards, given her lifelong commitment to education and to helping others grow and succeed. Cathleen is survived by her husband of 32 years, Raymond A. Wagner, Jr., and her two sons, Benjamin and Andrew. She is also survived by her mother, Janet Calvert, of Cheswick, Pennsylvania and her younger sister, Lynne Rae Perkins, of Suttons Bay, Michigan. She was the daughter-in-law of Carolyn Wagner and Raymond A Wagner, Sr., of East Liverpool, Ohio, and the niece of Alice Lewis, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Evelyn E. Ramming, of Greenville, Pennsylvania. In her spare time, Cathleen enjoyed the position of President of the Crystal Chappell Fan Club, which occupied a great deal of her time and energy outside of the classroom. Several times per year, Cathleen would coordinate nationwide meetings of Crystal Chappell fans, making numerous lifelong friends in the process, including Ms. Chappell, herself. Cathleen was also a lover of music and accomplished singer, oftentimes singing solo hymns at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 21st from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 22nd from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Seederly- Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana, Ohio.
