Park Ave. Columbiana, Ohio, passed away at 11:50 a.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Parkside Health Care Center where he had been a resident for 2 A½ years. Charlie was born on November 6, 1920 in Akron, Ohio, the son of Charles M. and Hazel J. Peterson Harper. Mr. Harper worked from 1948-1978 for Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. of Akron as their manager of Firestone Farms of Columbiana. He taught from 1978-1985 Farm Business Planning and Analysis for Adult Education at Columbiana County Career Center. Charlie was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Columbiana where he served on the Board of Trustees in past years. Mr. Harper was a W.W. II U. S. Army Aircorp veteran, serving in India. He graduated from Akron Buchtel High School in 1938, then got his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from Ohio State in 1946. He had served on the Board of the Columbiana County Park District and was instrumental in the development of Greenway Bicycle & Walking Trail between Leetonia and Lisbon, Ohio, a past member of the Planning Commission of Columbiana, a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau, the Columbiana County Mental Health Board, the Columbiana County Fair Board, the Fairfield Ruritan where he served as past-president and Columbiana Rotary where he served as past -president. Mr. Harper was preceded in death on November 21, 1984, by his wife, the former Merilynn "Mikki" McGinley. They were married March 23, 1948. Survivors include a daughter Heidi (Timothy) Griffy of Wadsworth, Ohio; a son Howard Harper of Ravenna, Ohio; two grandchildren Carrie of Columbus and Christopher of Akron. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at the Columbiana Cemetery with Rev. John Bartholomew officiating. Burial will be in Columbiana Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that material tributes be made to Columbiana County Park District.
