Columbiana - Dean S. Vestal, 89, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, May 31 at his home in Columbiana. Dean was born on April 5, 1927, in Leetonia, OH, a son of Frank Burl and Viola (Donnalley) Vestal. A 1945 Leetonia High School graduate, Dean proudly served his country in WWII in the US Navy in the Pacific theatre aboard the USS Copahee. He worked as a rolling mill operator for over 40 years at Cold Metal Products in Youngstown. Dean was a member of the First Christian Church of Columbiana. He was an original donor to the WWII Museum of New Orleans, LA, and a member of American Legion Post #131 in Leetonia. A history buff, he was well versed in American history, and was an avid Cleveland Indians fan. He is survived by his wife Ellen, whom he married May 30, 1989; two daughters Deborah Vestal of Toledo and Deanna MacKay and her husband Robert of Mt. Vernon, WA; step-daughter Sherry Jackson and her husband Daron of Salem; grandson Jeffrey Smith currently of Salem; brother Paul Vestal and his wife Rosemary of Westerville, OH; sister-in-law Lois Vestal of Columbiana and many nieces and nephews. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Carol Vestal Batman and her husband Orland, and by his brothers Kenneth, Ross and Don Vestal and Donald's wife Millie. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home, 154 S. Elm Street, Columbiana with Pastor John Reed officiating. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m., an hour before the services at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Salem Amvets Post 45. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations may be made in Dean's memory to The National WWII Museum, 945 Magazine Street New Orleans, LA 70130. The family has entrusted Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana, Ohio with the arrangements for their loved one.
