New Waterford - Donald H. Unger, 88, passed away early Tuesday morning, November 1 at his home in New Waterford, where he had lived all his life. Donald was born on August 13, 1928, in New Waterford, a son of Lester and Mabel (Jones) Unger. A New Waterford High School graduate, he also attended Youngstown State University. Donald served his nation proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked at Franklin and Cherry Hill furniture as an upholsterer. He retired from Stearns and Foster after more than 20 years in the furniture business. He enjoyed golfing, gardening and was a professional scuba diver in his earlier years. He was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians. Donald was a member of the New Waterford Methodist Church. He also belonged to the New Waterford Eagles 2415, the American Legion Post 290 in Columbiana, and the East Palestine Moose Lodge 467. He is survived by his wife, Roberta (Kelty) Unger; a daughter Bonnie Unger (Charles Hall) of New Waterford; two sons Les (Darlene) of Beloit and Fred (Gina) of New Waterford; a sister Janis (Don) Sutherin of Poland; six grandchildren Nathan, Josh, Shawn, Ashton, Vaughn, and Kylar; two great-grandchildren Hadden and Blake; long-time friend Lenny Gayan and several nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert Unger. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home, 154 S. Elm Street, Columbiana. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m., an hour before the services at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Crest Haven Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 290.
