Edward W. Gustafson, 83, of 162 Lakeshore Court, Columbiana, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the Salem Community Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Gustafson was born on April 17, 1926 in Columbiana, Ohio, the son of the late Ernest C. and Laura A. (Horn) Gustafson. Edward was a 1944 Columbiana High School graduate and attended Y.S.U. and Iowa State University. He worked for 36 years as an installer repairman and retired as a district manager in engineering and construction for Ohio Bell in Youngstown, Ohio. From 1970-1972 Edward worked in New York City on a computer program for Ohio Bell. He was a member of the Grace Church in Columbiana. Mr. Gustafson was a W.W.II Army Air force Veteran. He was a member of the American Legion Post 290 of Columbiana, a member of the Ohio Bell Pioneers and a charter member of the Jaycees of Columbiana. Edward served on the park and cemetery board of directors and was also past president of the board and was instrumental with other board members for the installation of the slide at the Firestone pool and the walking trails. He was a little league baseball coach, avid golfer and Cleveland Browns fan and enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. Mr. Gustafson is survived by his wife, Helen (Pike) Gustafson, whom he married on October 23, 1948. He is also survived by two daughters, Lori (Erik) Tadge of Perry, Ohio, Vicki (Denny) Waggle of Salem, Ohio; two sons, Greg (Ann) Gustafson of Columbiana, Tim (Teresa) Gustafson of Leetonia, Ohio; and six grandchildren. Edward was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Blair and Miriam Bell; and by one brother Howard "Hud" Gustafson. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Grace Church in Columbiana with Pastor Rob Joy officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that material contributions may be made to the Columbiana Park Board or the Grace Church of Columbiana.
