BOARDMAN- Ernest D. "Joe" Smith, 80, known as Ernie to some and Joe to others, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon at his home. Ernest was born on June 20, 1933 in German Twp, Pa., the son of Brian and Bessie (Davis) Smith. A graduate of German Township High School, he proudly served his country in the US Army, and was stationed in Germany from 1953 to 1956 during the Korean War. Ernest was a structural ironworker for over 50 years, and took great pride in what he did. He was a member of Ironworkers Local 207, where he held a position on the executive board for some time, and also taught in the apprenticeship program for upcoming ironworkers. In his spare time, he loved square dancing, hunting, playing cards, working outdoors, solving crossword puzzles, reading, gardening, and most importantly, spending time with his friends and family. Ernest was a member of the Boardman United Methodist Church for over 50 years, the F & A.M. Lodge #766 of Poland, the Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite, and the NRA. He leaves to cherish his precious memory, his daughters, Joan Vujovich and Jill A. Stofira, both of Charlotte, N.C, Janne Oriole of Manchester, N. H., and Joy Craven of Boardman; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and his sister, Hazel Slabaugh Franks of Masontown, Pa. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Louise Johnson, whom he married on August 24, 1954 and died on December 27, 2009; an infant daughter; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and his brother Charles. The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima. Services will follow at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Pam Buzalka officiating. Interment services will be at 1 pm on Sunday at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Uniontown, Pa.
