George R. Cannon, 95, of 132 7th street, Columbiana, Ohio, passed away at 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday, December 15, 2009. Mr. Cannon was born on May 24, 1914 in Lucesto Hollow, Pennsylvania, to the late Albert A. and Ethel M. (Francis) Cannon. George was employed for 42 years at the Columbiana Boiler Company, working as a floor worker and on the forming press, and as a foreman for 20 years in the Container Department. Mr. Cannon also worked for Bob Bott for several years as a carpenter, worked in CCC camp for 21 months from 1934-1936 and did yard mowing up until his 94th birthday. George was a W.W. II Navy Veteran having served in Amphibious Forces in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbiana and served in the American Legion for over 55 years, where he helped with the Street Fair, setting veterans grave markers and flags for over 20 years and volunteering with the Salvation Army for over 10 years. George also enjoyed gardening and working around his home. Mr. Cannon was preceded in death on February 4, 1999, by his wife, Mary F. (Chestnut) Cannon, whom he married on May 1, 1942. George is survived by one sister, Helen Whan of Leetonia, Ohio; many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. Mr. Cannon was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Dave and Harry Cannon. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2009 at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana with Rev. Paula K. Archdeacon officiating. Burial will be in Columbiana Cemetery where a Military Honors service will be conducted by the American Legion Post 290 of Columbiana. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2009 and one hour prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. on December 18, 2009 at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana. The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions in George's memory to the American Legion-Post 290, P.O. Box 143, 44403 St. Rt. 14, Columbiana, Ohio, 44408.
