Obituary

George Michael Schorsten Sr., age 91, of Canton, OH, passed away at 6:47 pm, July 19, 2011 at Aultman Hospital, Canton, OH. Mr. Schorsten, the son of Martin Joseph and Christine (Fisi) Schorsten, was born on July 25, 1919 in Canton, OH. George was a graduate of Kent State University in 1970. He moved to Lisbon in 1976 from Louisville, OH. Mr. Schorsten retired from the Columbiana J.V.S. where he taught from 1966 to 1985 as an instructor of welding. He had the first vocational program in the county in 1966. Prior to teaching at J.V.S. he taught at David Anderson in Lisbon. He also worked for Ford Motor Company of Canton as a tool and die welder for sixteen years. George was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church of Columbiana. He also was a fourth degree honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Schorsten was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran who served in the South Pacific and was stationed at Ford Island. George is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann (Schoeppner) Schorsten, whom he married November 20, 1941. Mr. Schorsten is survived by seven daughters, Patricia Matz of Canton, OH, Sister Susan Schorsten of Youngtown, Peggy Woodruff of Louisville, OH, Kathy Schorsten of Forest, Virginia, Mickie Richards of Waynesburg, OH, Gayle Schleicher of Brant Rock, MA, and Judee (David) Donnelly of Fort Wayne, IN and one son, George Michael (Marian) Schorsten of Boardman. He also is survived by one sister, Mrs. Pauline Timms of Maui, HI, nineteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by one grandson, Steven Matz, one granddaughter Christina Richards and a son-in-law, Don Richards. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, July 25, 2011 at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church, 3430 St. Michael Blvd. NW, Canton, OH 44718-3099 at 11:00 am with Rev. Brian Cline officiating. Friends may call 2-4 pm Sunday, July 24, 2011 at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church in the Day Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the St. Louis Cemetery in Louisville, OH. Material contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Humility of Mary PO Box 534 Villa Maria, PA 16155. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home.
