Gerald C. Paulin, 77, of Poland, Ohio, passed away at 8:30 p.m., on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Ivy Woods Manor, after many years of illness. "Jerry" was born at home on April 14, 1931 in New Springfield, Ohio, the son of Charles and Helen (Allen) Paulin. Jerry graduated from North Lima High School in 1949, with classmates that remained his friends throughout his life. He was very active in basketball and baseball during his high school years. He married his high school sweetheart, Norma Seidner, on June 10, 1950. Soon after their marriage, he was drafted into the army in June of 1951 and served with distinction in the Korean War, attached to the 171st Field Artillery Battalion as an artillery surveyor. He was awarded the commendation ribbon with pendant for meritorious service. He remained in Korea until the war ended in 1953. On May 3, 2003, he received a letter of appreciation from the Major General representing the Republic of Korea. Jerry had many talents, earning his living as a homebuilder. Other talents were fine cabinet and furniture making, including many grandfather clocks. He and his wife moved to Venice Florida where they were active in the community for 19 years and Jerry excelled in yet another art form of oil painting. He won several awards for his artwork at the Canfield Fair. He returned to Poland, Ohio from Venice, Florida in 2000. He was a member of the Poland United Methodist Church. He leaves many loving memories with his wife of 57 years, Norma Paulin; his two sons, Kerry (Patricia) Paulin and Brad Paulin along with his friend Tami LaPaze; two grandchildren, Lindsey and Lauren, all of Boardman; a sister, Doris (William) Whan of Poland; and several nieces and nephews. Very special in his life were his brothers in law, Les (Jan) Seidner, Don (Linda) Seidner and Bill (Doris) Whan. Due to renovations at the Poland United Methodist church, the memorial service will be held at the First Covenant Church of Boardman, Ohio, 5210 Glenwood Ave, Boardman, Ohio at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008, with Rev. Mike Grant officiating. The American Legion Benjamin Firestone Post 290 will conduct a military honors service in the church court yard. A luncheon for all, provided by First Covenant Hospitality Committee will immediately follow the service. There will be calling hours one half hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hospice of the Valley, or the The Poland United Methodist Church Horizon Fund. The Paulin family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the employees and organization of Ivy Woods Manor for compassionate care during his stay there.
