Obituary

Irma Valida Vinakalns, 97, of Columbiana, Ohio, passed away at 1:32 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, 2010 from infirmities of age. Irma was born August 3, 1912 in Birzi, Latvia, the daughter of the late Martins and Mile (Rengards) Cernovskis. Mrs. Vinakalns came to America in 1949 and lived in North Lima, working for Stackhouse Gardens. From 1950-1956 she worked for I.P. Lewis Orchards in New Waterford. Irma moved to Columbiana in 1956 and worked for Landmark Foods, then Birnbaums Clothing Store in Boardman Plaza as a seamstress and at Dale Cleaners in the same capacity. She retired from Dale Cleaners. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in New Waterford. Irma spent her retirement years reading, gardening, sewing, listening to Latvian music and writing letters to relatives in Latvia. Irma was preceded in death on September 16, 2001 by her husband, Bernarts Vinakalns, whom she married on October 26, 1940. Mrs. Vinakalns is survived by one daughter, Ruth Perkins of Columbiana, Ohio; one son, John (Shannon) Vinakalns of Wylie, Texas; four grandchildren, Kristy (Donald) Pedicini of Columbiana, Ohio; Daniel (Stacey) Vinakalns of Grapevine, Texas, Michael Vinakalns and Grant Vinakalns of Wylie, Texas and one great-grandson Garon Pedicini of Columbiana, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Gary Perkins and sister Lucy in Latvia. Upon Irma's wishes there will be no services or calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that material contributions be made to the Zion Lutheran Church in New Waterford.
