Obituary

James A. "Jim" Schmidt, 80, 11539 Sharrott Rd., passed away Sunday, June 19, at his home. Jim was born in Struthers on May 13, 1931, the son of J. Audley and Sophia (Gardner) Schmidt, and was a lifelong area resident. A 1949 graduate of North Lima High School, Jim had worked for Ohio Edison for 40 years. He was a member of the Naval Reserves for 9 years. Jim also served on the Beaver Township Volunteer Fire Department, acting as 1st Captain, Assistant Fire Chief, and EMT. Jim also worked the Red Cross as an instructor of First Aid and CPR for 15 years. He was a member Allen Lodge 276 F & A.M. of Columbiana and a past member of the Beaver Ruritans. Jim was also a past member of the South Range Booster Club. He enjoyed decorating his house for the Christmas season, constructing a light display that expanded in size every year for over 30 years. Jim was also a very patriotic man, and had several patriotic displays in his front yard. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Helen L. (Groner) Schmidt, whom he married July 29, 1951; his daughters Judi Bell and Pam (Bruce) Mills of New Springfield; his sons David of North Lima and Tom Sr. of New Springfield; and his sister, Grace McCormick of North Lima. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Jessica (John) Crouse, Jim and Joshua Schmidt, Joe and Angela Mills, Elizabeth Bell, and Tommy and Adam Schmidt. Jim also leaves his great-grandchildren, Hannah, J.D., Heath, Carson, Dylan, Skye, and Korey Lynn. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 8 pm, with a Masonic service at 8 pm, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home, North Lima Chapel. The family will also receive friends from 10 to 11 am on Friday, with services beginning at 11 am the Mt. Olivet United Church of Christ in North Lima with the Reverends Melinda Q. Lacefield and Richard Bartholomew officiating. Material contributions may be made to the Hospice House or the Mt. Olivet United Church of Christ.
