Railroad Street, Columbiana, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2006 at his residence. James was born on October 1, 1925 in Tucson, Arizona, the son of William H. and Daisy Mae Welch Baker. James retired from Hunt Valve Company of Salem in 1989. He was previously employed in machine maintenance at United Engineering in Youngstown, Ohio. He also worked at L.W. Nash in East Palestine, and Pratt-Whitney in Florida. James served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 on the U.S.S. Kittson in the Pacific Theatre during WWII as Gunner mate 1st Class. He was a member of First Christian Church in Columbiana, a member of the Masonic Lodge and a former member of the Columbiana Auxiliary Police. James loved to fish and he was also an avid woodworker. James is survived by his wife the former Clara Belle Marshall whom he married November 29, 1947, one daughter Marilyn (James) Kelley of Leetonia, two sons James W. (Sharon) Baker Jr., of Smithville, Tennessee, Dan (Darla Sue) Baker of Sebring, two sisters Eileen Baker of Mentor, Ohio, and Elizabeth Shermer of Cowansville, Pa, five grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters Mildred Robinson, Evelyn Logan and Marion Jugan. Private services will be held on Thursday December 7, 2006 at Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana with Mr. Len Derico officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery where the American Legion Benjamin Firestone Post 290 will conduct a Military Honors service. Private calling hours for family will be held Wednesday evening at the Funeral Home. The family suggests that material tributes be made to Hospice of the Valley.
