John L. Beck, 75, of Lisbon Road, Canfield, Ohio, passed away early Saturday morning at his home, May 30, 2009 from complications of cancer. He was born November 6, 1933 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of the late Floyd and Marietta (Little) Beck. Mr. Beck was a life long area resident and still resided in the home he had built on the family farm 54 years ago. He attended Greenford school and worked as a Structural Iron Worker for 39 years for Local 207 of Youngstown. John was a member of the Midway Mennonite Church of Columbiana and the Mahoning County Farm Bureau Association. He enjoyed deer hunting and farming and especially growing watermelons which he shared with his friends. He also enjoyed history, especially the Civil War era. John is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. (Lehman) Beck, whom he married June 20, 1954; two sons, Lee (Karen) Beck of Greenford, Ohio, Mark (Jill) Beck of Columbiana, Ohio; one sister, Darlene (William) Smith of Youngstown, Ohio; two brothers, Paul (Marilee) Beck of Tish Amingo, Oklahoma, David (Anne) Beck of Poland, Ohio; five grandchildren, Brandy (Bryan) Hively of Canfield, Ohio, Dan (Jeanne) Beck of Salem, Ohio, Adam (Melissa) Beck of Salem, Ohio, Heidi (Randy) Troyer of Columbiana, Ohio, Heather (Ry) Torhan of Columbiana, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren, Savannah and Samuel Hively, Wyatt Beck, Caden and Morgan Beck. Mr. Beck was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Hollie Beck. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Midway Mennonite Church in Columbiana with Rev. Herman Myers officiating. Calling hours will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana and one hour prior to the service at the church from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday. Burial will be in Midway Cemetery. The family suggests that material contributions be made to Midway Mennonite Church or Make a Wish Foundation, P.O. Box 29119, Phoenix, Arizona 85038-9119.
