DAMASCUS - Lela Mong Covert, 87, formerly of Salem and Columbiana, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Auburn Skilled Nursing and Rehab surrounded by her family. Lela was born on September 10, 1927 in Dahlonega, GA, the daughter of Clyde and Clara (Hester) Bruce, and moved to this area in 1949. She was a member of Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church of Salem. Lela was a homemaker who would later sell real estate for local real estate firms from 1977 until she retired in 1992. Lela's memory is cherished by her daughter Linda (David) Edwards of Wilson, NC; her four sons James H. (Janet) of Columbiana, Joseph D. of Salem, Kenneth of St. Augustine, FL, and Samuel (Kim) of Salem; a step-son William Covert of FL; a sister Betty Steagall of Salem; 13 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Joseph D. Mong Sr., who passed away in 1967; her second husband Everett Covert, who passed away July 21, 1996, her daughter Brenda Dolan; her step-daughter Ruth Covert; her step-sons Darell and Hayes Covert; sisters Gladys, Olive, and Edna; and brothers Sammy, JD, and Clyde Jr. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church of Salem, 1095 Newgarden Avenue, Salem with Pastor Stanley Graybill officiating. Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made in Lela's name to Wounded Warrior's Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675 and Smile Train, PO Box 96231, Washington, D.C., 20090-6231. Lela's family would like to thank Hospice of Alliance, Ohio and especially the Auburn Nursing Home for their kindness and compassion during the time she resided there.
