Obituary

COLUMBIANA - Leonard S. Pritchard, M.D., FACFP (Fellow of the American College of Family Practice), passed away at his home Sunday, August 10 with his family by his side. Dr. Pritchard was born in Pittsburgh on December 27, 1924, the son of Hazel S. and Leonard Charles Pritchard. He graduated from Langley High School, working briefly as an engineering draftsman. When World War II broke out, he joined the service where he spent the next three years in the U.S. Air Force, serving in the China, Burma, India Theater - specifically Calcutta, Kunming, Hankow, Shanghi, and Canton (Quanzhu). Subsequently, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and then from that University's School of Medicine. After an internship at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh he went on to do a "locum tenens" in Mercer, PA. Dr. Pritchard established his own practice in Columbiana in 1954, where he remained for the next 35 years as a Board Certified Family Physician. Obstetrics was his chief subspecialty and he delivered approximately 2000 babies in the ensuing years on the staff at Salem Community Hospital. During those years he was privileged to serve as President of Staff, Chief of Medicine, Chief of Staff, member of the Executive Committee and the Hospital Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Ohio State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Ohio Academy of Family Practice, and President of the Columbiana County Medical Society. He was also listed in "Who's Who in Ohio." A faithful member of the Columbiana Presbyterian Church, Dr. P was active there all his life as a ruling Elder, Trustee, Choir member, and substitute organist and pianist. He loved music all his life. At home he enjoyed his piano and theater organ as well as his calliope for which he was a familiar figure around the county playing for parades, picnics, festivals, and always for Columbiana's big Fourth of July celebration and its Christmas parade. Woodworking, sculpting, and furniture building were also hobbies. Dr. P. was President of the Kiwanis Club of Columbiana, President of PATOS- the Pittsburgh Area Theater Organ Society, a Columbiana Councilman for eight years and President of Council. He was a member of the Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals. For several years he was a regular columnist for the Morning Journal newspaper, and also served as President of the Columbiana Park Board and the Columbiana County Board of Health. Other Boards included the Red Cross, the Columbiana Chamber of Commerce, the American Cancer Society and the County Board of Mental Health. He was a longtime member of the American Legion, as well as President. He served as long time Newsletter Editor for the Columbiana Historical Society. Fraternally his memberships included Phi Rho Sigma (a college honor fraternity), Sigma Chi, and the Masonic Lodge. Politically Dr. P. was active in the Republican Party and served on their Central Committee. A devoted husband and father, Dr. P. leaves his cherished wife Joanne S. Pritchard, a daughter Virginia (Ginny) Perkins and her husband Dave- a minister of the Gospel, both of Columbiana, and their children - Kate (Chris) Holm of Columbiana, Jonathan (Megan) Perkins, and Hope (Brian) Coulter, and additionally four great grandchildren. His son Carl, a prominent well known public speaker and published writer, resides in Frederick, Maryland with his wife Nancy and two grown sons - Adam (Ashleigh) and James. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 14 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 28 E. Park Ave., Columbiana with Dr. Bob McCreight officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 13 from 5-8 p.m. at Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home, 154 S. Elm St., Columbiana, and also one hour prior to the services at the church. The Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana, Ohio is entrusted with the arrangements.
