Obituary

COLUMBIANA – Martin C. "Rube" Ruby, Sr., 86, of Columbiana, passed away Thursday,March 9, 2017 surrounded by his family following an extended illness.

Martin was born on July 20, 1930 in Youngstown, the son of John G. and Helen M. (Cantor) Ruby, and was a life-long area resident. Martin was a member of Jerusalem Lutheran Church. On March 22, 1975 he married the former Lorene Detwiler.

Martin was an 82nd airborne paratrooper from 1947 - 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Youngstown City Schools in 1985 with 30 years of service and was head custodian at Wilson High School. During his career, Martin was past president of the Youngstown Public School Employees Local 1143- AFSCME AFL-CIO. He also served as a staff representative of AFSME Ohio Council #8, and a past president of SERO – School Employees Retirees of Ohio. He also did volunteer work for the Kidney Foundation.

Martin's memory is cherished by his wife Lorene, his daughter Debra Gerak of Youngstown; his two sons Martin Charles Ruby Jr. of Youngstown and Thomas C. Ruby of Youngstown and daughter-in-law Karen Ruby of McDonald; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother William M. Ruby.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home, 154 S. Elm St., Columbiana. Friends may call one before services, at 10:00 am at the funeral home.
