Robert J. Mathews, 78, of Columbiana, Ohio, passed away at 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Northside Medical Center. He was born July 3, 1930 in Lowellville, Ohio, the son of Daniel and Beatrice (Coyne) Mathews. Bob came to Columbiana in 1964. He retired in 1984 after 35 years from Republic Steel. Bob was a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church in North Lima and the South Range Council of Church and Community. He was also a retired member of the United Steel Workers #1331. Bob served in the Army Corp. of Engineers In the Korean Conflict. Bob was preceded in death on August 11, 1996 by his wife, Bette E. (Weaver) Mathews, whom he married on March 30, 1958. He is survived by his daughter, Danna Lynn of Columbiana, Ohio; and one brother, Ray Mathews of Enon Valley, Pennsylvania. He also leaves a soul mate Judi Karcher of Columbiana. Bob was preceded in death by two brothers Daniel and Ralph Mathews. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Good Hope Lutheran Church in North Lima with Rev. Ralph Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Columbiana Cemetery where a military honors ceremony will be performed by The American Legion Post 290 of Columbiana. Calling hours will be from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima and from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Good Hope Lutheran Church.
