Smith, 87, of New Springfield, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 12:30 a.m. from infirmities of age. Mrs. Smith was born on January 13, 1920 in New Springfield, OH, the daughter of Clark O. and Luella Burkey Beight. Ruth was a lifelong area resident and was a member of the Old Springfield United Church of Christ, where she had been a past Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Smith was also a homemaker and helped out at local area greenhouses and was an active band booster at Springfield Local Schools. She also loved to crochet and do word puzzle books. Ruth married Charles G. Smith on March 1, 1941, he preceded her in death on August 3, 1965, she was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth E. Smith on August 16, 2001. Survivors include three daughters; Mrs. Darlene L. Shofstahl of Petersburg, Mrs. Nick (Mary Ellen) Markota of Youngstown, Mrs. LeRoy Henry (Sarah) Strahin of New Springfield and daughter-in-law Janet Smith of New Springfield, fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima, with Pastor Charles Brown officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.
