Sarah Ann
Withers
Jun 7, 1915 — Jul 7, 2007
There will be services at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Episcopal Church on Glenwood Avenue in Boardman for Sarah Ann Withers, 92, who passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, July 7. She was born June 7, 1915 in Boardman to Hazel Hitchcock and Grover Moff. Sarah attended Boardman School, Riverside Middle School in Riverside, California and the Bishop School in LaJolia, California. She loved to share her childhood experiences, traveling on the Pullman cars to California, dining on the train and playing on the grounds of the historical Mission Inn, where she watched Amelia Earhart have lunch on the patio. On her frequent trips to California as an adult, Sarah enjoyed many lunches and dinners on the same patio. The docents at the Mission Inn loved to pick her brain for stories they could add to their tour presentations. She was a research contributor to the historical background of the home, now a historical site, Rickledge in Laguna Beach, which was built by the Millers, owners of the Mission Inn. Sarah had spent summers with the Miller's children at Rockledge. In 1935, Sarah married Donald Withers at St. James Episcopal Church, which now sits in the Boardman Park. They were both very active members of the church, the Farm Bureau and the Boardman Historical Society. At age 87, Sarah began her watercolor painting, studying with nationally and internationally known watercolor artists, including Roger Armstrong, Roger Folk, Brenda Smith, Harvey Clenens, Marlene Gerloff and Jeanne Davis. She sold her work and it hangs in Nettles Island, Newport Beach, Sacramento, Orange and Mission Viejo, California. She leaves many friends in Ohio, Florida and California and her family, a son, Robert and Ruth Withers; a daughter, Judy and Sheldon Cunningham of California; her grandchildren, Sean Cunningham of California, Robert (Shelly) Zwingler of Ohio and Randal (Gina) Zwingler of Colorado; and her great-grandchildren, Natalie Zwingler, Chad (Alyson) Zwingler, Ryan Zwingler, Brie Zwingler, Adam Zwingler, Jarod Zwingler and Emily Zwingler. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home in North Lima and from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boardman Historical Scoiety, P.O. Box 3134, Boardman, Ohio 44513.
