NEW SPRINGFIELD - Vera E. Dey, 93, passed away early Monday morning, February 23, a day after turning 93 years old. She was born on February 22, 1922 in Columbiana to parents Robert Thomas and Emma (Schutz) Sheely. A 1938 graduate of New Springfield High School, Vera also earned a business degree from Youngstown Business College. A member of New Springfield Trinity Unity Methodist Church and New Springfield Church of God, Vera enjoyed golf, bingo, and mowing grass on her John Deere lawn mower. But most of all, she loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Vera became a lathe operator at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube during WWII, making heavy bolts and performing other duties as a "Rosie the Riveter". She later was employed at Sheely's Furniture and Appliances until retiring after 40 years. Vera leaves to cherish her memory her children Shirley Compton and her husband Rick of New Middletown, Jeanie Patterson and her husband Rich of Poland, Janie Zitkovic and her husband Bob of New Springfield, Bill Dey and his wife Patty of New Waterford, and Edward Dey (Karen Mastran) of New Springfield; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters Wilma Hill of Columbiana and Patty (Dick) Brungard of New Middletown; one brother Dale (Alyce) Sheely of North Lima; and her beloved pets Lucy and Sophie. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William "Bill" Dey, whom she married August 30, 1941 and who passed away October 12, 2008, and her sister Jean Sheely. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 26 at 11:00 a.m. at New Springfield Church of God, 3649 East Garfield Road, New Springfield, OH with Pastor Jonathan Holloway officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 25 from 5-8 p.m. and also on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at New Springfield Church of God 3649 East Garfield Road, New Springfield, OH 44443. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests material contributions may be made in Vera's memory to the New Springfield Trinity United Methodist Church, 2427 Columbiana Road, New Springfield, OH 44443.
