Obituary

COLUMBIANA - Waldo "Wuzzy" A. Schlag, 93, passed away Wednesday evening, October 28 at Whispering Pines Village. Mr. Schlag was born on October 2, 1922 in Salem, OH, a son of Herbert L. and Mamie V. (Detwiler) Schlag. He proudly served our country during World War II by joining the Army Air Corp in November 1942, attaining the rank of Corporal. He served as a flight traffic clerk in air transport command in the Pacific Asiatic Theatre. He was honorably discharged December 1945. Wuzzy lived most of his life in Columbiana. Among places of employment, he worked at Fullerton Body Shop and also owned and operated his own shop, Parkway Auto Body from 1954-1965. He was a car salesman for Howard Wilson-Pontiac in Boardman, and also worked for Columbiana Buick Olds and Columbiana Motor Company. Waldo worked at Albert Advertising and Lee Wayne Advertising until 1989, when he retired. Known as the longest living member of First Presbyterian Church of Columbiana, Waldo also belonged to the Allen Masonic Lodge #276, and was a Life-Member of the American Legion Post 290 in Columbiana, and served as Commander in 1951. Wuzzy leaves to cherish his precious memory his daughter, Lana Dobson and her husband Terry of New Middletown; his son Gary Schlag of Wallace, W. Va.; three grandchildren, Taryn, Chase and Dane Dobson of New Middletown; a great-grandson Parker Dobson; and a sister Wilma Brubaker of Columbiana. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, the former Catherine 'Kit' Ward, whom he married December 18, 1946 and who passed away June 23, 2013. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Seederly-Mong and Beck, 154 S. Elm Street, Columbiana with Pastor Fritz Nelson and Chaplain Ken Rambo officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The American Legion Post 290 of Columbiana will conduct a military honors service immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made in Wuzzy's memory to the First Presbyterian Church of Columbiana, 28 E. Park Ave., Columbiana, OH 44408. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Whispering Pines and Allcaring Hospice for the care and comfort extended to Wuzzy during his time of need.
