Obituary

COLUMBIANA - Walter Ray Hartsock, 83, passed away at his home early Friday morning, May 22 following an extended illness. Mr. Hartsock was born on September 23, 1931 in Struthers, a son of Perry and Frances (McIntyre) Hartsock. He graduated Struthers High School in 1949, and would join the U.S. Army in November of that year. He served in the Pacific as an MP during the 1950s, doing atomic weapons testing during the Korean War. He married the former Barbara Culp on March 19, 1953 in Baltimore, MD, and together they would raise six children. Walter joined the Ohio State Patrol and served at various posts from 1954-1964. He became a Branch Manager for Underwriters Adjusting Co. and CNA Ins. until retiring in 1995. Walter belonged to Good Hope Lutheran Church in North Lima, serving on the Church Council and the Choir. He also was a member of the Honor Guard at the American Legion Post 290 in Columbiana. Walter enjoyed golf, football, and painting; he also volunteered at area nursing homes, conducting sing-a-longs for many years. He leaves to cherish his precious memory his wife Barbara, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage this year; a daughter Antonia (Kenneth) Ujczo; five sons, Walter David, Daniel, Donald (Elaine), Dennis (Mary), and Bruce (Laurie); 14 grandchildren, Katie, David, Danny, Michele, Jessica, Kristie, Gregory, Aaron, Jennifer, Brian, Mason, Anthony, Leo, and Genevieve; and three great-grandchildren Hannah, Aiden, and Charlotte. Mr. Hartsock was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, May 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Good Hope Lutheran Church, 12030 Market St., North Lima with Pastor Ralph Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made in Walter's memory to the Good Hope Lutheran Church Window Fund. The family has entrusted Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima, Ohio with the arrangements for their loved one.
