William "Bill" H. Dey, 88, of New Springfield, Ohio, passed away at 8:20 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at his home, surrounded by his loving wife of 67 years, his children and grandchildren. Bill was born on December 8, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of John and Caroline (Kuppersmith) Dey. Bill was a life long area resident and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of New Springfield. He loved gardening, golfing, feeding and watching wild birds and giving his grandchildren and great-grandchildren rides on his golf cart. He was the owner and operator of Dey Brothers Excavation & Construction from 1948 until his retirement in 1982. He served in the Marine Corps in W.W. II, Pacific Theatre, serving in Okinawa, New Britain and Peleliu. Following the service he was owner and operator of the family farm in New Springfield. Prior to entering the service, he worked for Truscon Steel. Bill was a past member of the Fraternal Order of Moose of East Palestine, the American Legion Post #290 of Columbiana and the Washingtonville VFW Post # 5532 and was a Springfield Township trustee for 12 years. Bill is survived by his wife, Vera E. (Sheely) Dey, whom he married on August 30, 1941. He is also survived by three daughters, Shirley (Rick) Compton of New Middletown, Jeanie (Rich) Patterson of Poland, Ohio, Janie (Bob) Zitkovic of New Springfield; two sons, Bill Dey of Chippewa, Pennsylvania (fiancAC.e Patty Johnston) of New Waterford, Edward Dey of New Springfield; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Dey was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret (Sis) Crouse and five brothers, Richard, Bert, Frederick, Harold and Robert Dey. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at the New Springfield Church of God with Rev. Alan Leach officiating. The American Legion Benjamin Firestone Post #290 of Columbiana will conduct a military honors service at the New Springfield Church of God, following the committal service at the church. Burial will be in Columbiana Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m., all at the New Springfield Church of God in New Springfield. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Youngstown, Ohio 44512.
