Obituary

North Lima, OH - William R. Whan, 92, passed away Thursday evening, July 24 at Hospice House following complications after a fall. Bill was born on January 22, 1922 in North Lima, a son of William Homer and Margaret (Roys) Whan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. On March 17, 1943, Bill married the former Doris Paulin, and together they would raise three children. Mr. Whan dedicated his life to education. He began as a teacher, and later moved into administration, serving as a principal and then superintendent for several school districts including South Range. He retired as Director of Personnel of the Mahoning County Board of Education in 1980. William and Doris attended the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of New Springfield. Bill leaves to cherish his precious memory two daughters, Carolyn Riggins of New Middletown and Kathy Whan-Marko and her husband Jim of Mentor; a son, Michael Whan and his wife Jane of Liberty; two grandchildren, Lori and Brian; two great grandchildren, Lanna and Cara; and his sister, Bertha Richards of North Lima. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Kay Perry and Eleanor Ralston, and his brother Glenn Whan. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 28 at 11:30 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 13519 Woodworth Rd, New Springfield, OH 44443, with Pastor Aimee Raymond officiating. The family invites friends to a luncheon, which will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 28 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. at the church, an hour and a half prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in William's memory to the Hospice House, 9803 Sharrot Rd, Poland, OH 44514 . The Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima, Ohio has been entrusted with the arrangements.
