Wilmer D. Swope, 84, of Leetonia, passed away at 3:09 p.m. on February 1, 2010 following a long illness. He was born December 16, 1925 in Leetonia, Ohio to Herman and Mabel (Detrow) Swope. Wilmer was a farmer and worked at A & P Warehouse in Salem and at Buechner Residence Hall near YSU in Youngstown. He also served as a Fairfield Township Trustee from 1970-2001. Mr. Swope was a member of Midway Mennonite Church. He enjoyed writing Christian hymns and Mennonite Church history. Wilmer also liked collecting books, gardening, genealogy, and restoring antique clocks. Survivors include his wife, Alverda (Stoltzfus) Swope, whom he married October 19, 1952; five children, Daniel Swope of Leetonia, Ohio, Darlene (Edmund) Anderson of Lisbon, Ohio, Charlene (Art) Mamis of Hudsonville, Michigan, David Swope of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Miriam (Matthew) Roth of Metamora, Illinois; four grandchildren, Eliana Roth, Benjamin Roth, Naomi Roth, Jessica Anderson; one great-grandchild, Hayley Wilson; and his sister, Carolyn Warren of Rittman, Ohio. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010 at Midway Mennonite Church with Pastor Herman Myers and Pastor Harry Neuenschwander officiating. Burial will be in Midway Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana and one hour prior to the service at the church from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010 at the Midway Mennonite Church.
