Joseph Costanzo Obituary

Joseph Edward Costanzo, 84, of Columbiana, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2025. Born on March 26th, 1941, in Salem, Ohio, to Anthony and Carmel Costanzo, Joe lived a full life rooted in hard work, humor, and heart.

A proud graduate of Fairfield Waterford High School, Class of 1959, Joe excelled in football and basketball, showcasing the drive and determination that would carry him through life. Following his passion for craft, he graduated from Syracuse Barber School in New York and went onto complete additional training hours in Akron, Ohio – beginning what would become a remarkable 60-year career behind the barber chair.

Affectionately known throughout the community as “Joe the Barber,” he spent more than 60 years as a self-employed barber, proudly serving generations of loyal customers. Joe was known for his gift of conversation — whether he was sharing a joke, talking sports, or slipping a sticker onto someone’s back as they left the shop. His barber shop wasn’t just a place for a haircut; it was a place for laughter and friendship.

A devoted Ohio State fan, Joe also had a love for birds, the weather, and chatting about gas prices. Joe often stepped outside to take photos of the full moon with his American flag waving beside it, proudly sending them to family and friends or sharing them with neighbors as he talked about how bright it shone that night. It became a sweet ritual between him and granddaughter Kaylee – a simple, heartfelt joy that reflected his appreciation for life’s small wonders.

A man of faith and service, Joe was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Columbiana, where he served as both Deacon and Elder. He also coached Little League baseball for several years, guiding young players with his skill and wisdom.

Joe’s playful spirit shone brightest during the holidays, when family and friends eagerly awaited his annual gag gifts, which could be anything from trinket toys and snacks to lottery tickets or disposable razors. He also took great pride in helping organize the Memorial Day flyover at Firestone Cemetery, a tradition he faithfully upheld for many years.

Joe and his beloved wife, Mary Jane, shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. He was a proud father and cherished grandfather, affectionately known to his grandchildren as “Grandpa Joe.”

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane; his son Christopher (Jackie) Costanzo, and daughter Deborah S. Costanzo (Donald) Hargis; grandchildren Devanne, Kaylee, Christopher, and Maria; and his half-sisters Donna Jean Whippo, Denise Costanzo Ridinger and Shirley Jo Costanzo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister Joanna Seybert, brother Ronald Costanzo, and granddaughter Megan Costanzo.

Joe will be deeply missed by his family—including his beloved cat, Sugar—and by the entire Columbiana community who knew and loved him.
