POLAND – Mildred Detrow Grim, 97, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 26, 2024 at Hospice House in Poland.
Mildred was born July 14, 1926, and raised on a farm in Fairfield Township, Columbiana County. She was the middle child of five born to Harvey and Vertie (Metzler) Detrow.
A 1944 graduate of Fairfield Township High School, she later attended Goshen College, Goshen, IN. She worked in offices at Franklin Furniture, Goshen College, Northeast Ohio Poultry Association, Sebring Container, Olenik Manufacturing, and Deming Co. of Salem.
She was a lifelong active member of Leetonia Mennonite Church, serving in many different capacities over the years.
Mildred married Charles A. Grim of Washingtonville on June 15, 1951. They lived first in Washingtonville for 15 years, where they became foster parents for two months to three preschool boys, and then for several years to Joyce and Beverly Hickman, later moving to their new home on Crestview Road, Leetonia.
In 1998, with Charles’ health problems, they moved to the Shepherd of the Valley facility on Sharrott Road. After Charles’ death in December of that year, she served in several capacities within the Independent Residents organization, taking on the production of the monthly paper, Meadows Meanderings for over 12 years. Hobbies over the years included music, gardening, beekeeping and photography.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents and husband, are her sisters Dorothy Kaufmann and Marie Kurtz; her brother Arthur Detrow; and foster daughter Beverly Hodge.
She leaves her foster daughter Joyce (John) Pavlov of Lowellville, sister Doris Yoder of Goshen, IN, and many nieces, nephews and foster grandchildren.
Private services were held, and a memorial service is planned for a later date.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Shepherd of the Valley and Hospice House for taking such good care of Mildred.
