I am deeply saddened to hear of Martha Jean's passing. I retain pleasant memories of her. My father was working for her Dad, Paul both milking the Brown Swiss cows, the field work, and some in the implement repair shop of the John Deere business they had. I was born (and later my brother) while Dad still worked for them. I remember at at 4 coming to the barn and stirring the milk replacer for the calves. I also played in the sand pile with John Deere toy tractors and implements. Before Martha Jean became a teacher, and got married, she was one of my first non-family babysitters.
Dad went on to other jobs, we also went to Florida for a year. Upon return, when I was six, I started First Grade at Fairfield School. To my great surprise and great happiness, Martha Jean (oh, but I had to call her Mrs. Mercer now), was my First Grade teacher. :) I was overjoyed.
I am thankful for having had her as my teacher at such a young age, as she made learning fun and that helped me in later life.
May God be with you all and bring you comfort in this time of bereavement and adjustment to not having her with you physically. Keep the memories. God Bless.

With fond memories of a fellow flower lover. My first acquaintance, perhaps, was as a teacher's aide at Fairfield/Crestview, and as she taught the kids metric, I was learning, too. Of course I appreciated interaction with her as I came to pick strawberries and raspberries; and to purchase spring time flowers and shrubs. What a legacy she leaves, and she will be much missed. We are sorry that, no longer having our cars, we are unable to come to be with you in person at this time.

To the Mercer Family,
I have memories of working with Martha in the strawberry patch. Its amazing how fast time flies. We have 6 sons and the oldest is around the age I started picking maybe even a year older. It's 19 years since my mom died. May you feel God's comforting arms around you in this difficult time. With Sympathy, Jonathan & Marla Burkholder
